Meet the Projects- Shelter NI

Meet the Projects- Shelter NI

We’re working with some of the best organisations across the VCSE sector in Northern Ireland through Techies in Residence. We asked each of them their views on why they got involved in the project, and what they want to get out of it.

Shelter NI’s vision is to eliminate long term homelessness and poor housing, ensuring all households in Northern Ireland have the right of access to warm, decent, affordable, safe and secure homes. We are currently fighting a losing battle as homelessness is rising. As well as campaigning for strategic, policy, process and legal reforms to tackle homelessness, Shelter NI provides services to young homeless people and to older and disabled people who need their home adapted to maintain their independence. We plan to grow by reinvesting surplus funds into new initiatives and expanding existing services to meet need in new locations.

  • The aim of the Trusted Trader Scheme is to alleviate some of these stresses, by providing clients with traders who have been proven to deliver reliable, cost effective services in an appropriate manner. This information enables them to make independent decisions regarding their homes with greater confidence.
  • GABLE  works with an average of 500 older and disabled clients applying for an NIHE grant. The main problem is that most applicants find it difficult to select a contractor and increasingly applicants look to us for guidance about selecting a suitable contractor. Many of our clients are vulnerable people in need of a straight forward and simple process that minimises stress.
  • It will increase our reach enabling us to help a greater range of people across Northern Ireland as currently because of resourcing we are limited to the Northwest area only. Ultimately empowering more people to access services which will help them maintain and upkeep their homes resulting in safer and securer home lives.

The Techies in Residence programme is an initiative of Social Innovation NI, managed by the Building Change Trust, which in turn has been funded by Big Lottery Fund and also Comic Relief. Innovate NI have been appointed by the Trust as Managing Agent for the ongoing development and delivery of Techies in Residence.

Meet the Projects- Your Derry

Meet the Projects- Your Derry

We’re working with some of the best organisations across the VCSE sector in Northern Ireland through Techies in Residence. We asked each of them their views on why they got involved in the project, and what they want to get out of it.

Your Derry began life as a social movement with the goal of making the city a better place to live, work and visit. We believe that by simply improving the mindset of people across the city, we’ll create better leadership, more ambition and greater belief. We aim to foster greater social cohesion and inspire our citizens to be more engaged stakeholders, take risks and dream big – to take ownership of our own destiny and make change happen from within.

We want our young people to not only see the many assets and resources Derry has to offer, but to become positive contributors in creating a better shared future and a more prosperous city.

Making Derry a better place to work, live and visit, by inspiring individual ownership of the challenges we face.

It is our assertion that all these issues connect on a fundamental level – mindset. We aim to show that through their actions they (young people) can be agents of change and not victims of circumstance. We believe this can create a positive ripple effect and change the collective mindset of the city and its citizens as sustainable change in the real world is always preceded by a change in mindset.

Will give us a vehicle to engage with the young people of our city and to bring about positive change. We are hopeful the program will be a springboard to having an impact in the wider community and possibly beyond.

Meet the Projects- Mencap

Meet the Projects- Mencap

We’re working with some of the best organisations across the VCSE sector in Northern Ireland through Techies in Residence. We asked each of them their views on why they got involved in the project, and what they want to get out of it.

Tell us a little about your organisation.

Mencap are here to improve the lives of people with a learning disability and their families now, and work alongside them for a better future.  Our vision is a world where people with a learning disability are valued equally, listened to and included.

What do you hope to achieve from the Techies in Residence Programme?

Mencap want to utilise technology  to support the facilitation of accessing communities by replicating their environment, activity and processes so an individual can experience the opportunity before taking part.

What challenge is your organisation trying to address?

33% of young people with a learning disability spend less than an hour outside their homes on a typical Saturday.  49% of adults with a learning disability would like to spend more times outside the house.

Our challenge it to reduce any anxieties or fears they may have about the activities to increase their confidence to engage and participate

What’s the largest impact that Techies in Residence will have on your organisation?

The largest impact TiR could make is enabling a person with a learning disability to become more independent and more active within their communities.

Our TiR project impact will be measured by how much we can reduce  a person with a learning disability’s anxiety in trying new things and increasing their confidence to become more independent and connect with their communities.
